If you have lived in Topanga for 20 years you have lived here a long time. However, you have not lived here long enough to remember the fire of November 1993. That fire burned for 10 days from the top of Old Topanga Canyon to the coast in Malibu destroying over 300 homes, scorching thousands of acres, and taking the lives of three people. As you read about wild fires throughout California and the west you may think we are safe and well protected . . .
See the video on how Los Angeles County Fire Fighters battle Topanga's fires by air from 69Bravo.
You won't want to miss seeing this incredible video about 69Bravo's helipads showing how fighting Topanga fires from the air has saved our canyon from extensive fire destruction.
In this video, LA County Fire talks about the recent Topanga Sky Fire by saying, "They estimated that if the helipads (at 69Bravo) had not been there, and the water 'pumpkins' especially, the fire would have gone all the way from Topanga to the Pacific Ocean within two hours." Watch the video to learn more about 69Bravo and how it is one of the most important fire fighting assets for Topanga and Malibu. Click here to see this amazing video.
BY T-CEP—TOPANGA COALITION FOR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
"About 10 million Californians will practice how to ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ at 10:16 am on October 16th, 2014, during the “Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.”
The recent 6.0 magnitude earthquake that woke up residents in Napa County on Sunday, Aug. 24 reminded Los Angeles County residents and businesses that we all live in earthquake country. Being prepared for earthquakes, including knowing how to Drop, Cover and Hold On, could save your life and the lives of your loved ones.
Experts agree that the Los Angeles area will experience another major earthquake at some point. The ShakeOut Drill on October 16, 2014 is an opportunity for everyone in Topanga to focus on becoming better prepared and to practice how to survive and recover quickly from a big earthquake.

Are You Poisoning Wildlife?
Rodent Control and our Environment
Each day our wildlife is in danger of being poisoned by homeowners, local businesses, and professional exterminators. The poison comes from common household pesticides, the most dangerous of which are called “Anticoagulant Rodenticides.” This type of poison is easily purchased and commonly used to kill rodents.
These poisons target rats, mice, gophers and squirrels, but are also responsible for the indiscriminate deaths of hawks, owls, bobcats, coyotes, and mountain lions each year. Domestic animals like dogs and cats are especially vulnerable to these poisons.
Poison-Free Malibu, the Topanga Wild-life Youth Project (TWYP) and the To-panga Creek Watershed Committee are all helping to spread the anti-poison message. Special thanks to Kian and Joel Schulman, Malibu City, and the children and parents of the TWYP, who thank you for helping our wildlife thrive!
