Rat Poison Kills More Than Just Rodents

An adult female bobcat and a subadult male mountain lion have both died directly from the effects of anticoagulant rat poisons in the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains, according to National Park Service biologists.
Topanga Library to Open as a Cooling Center Aug. 16-18

Exposure to extreme heat can cause a variety of health problems, including heat stroke and even death. As SoCal temperatures climb into the 100s this weekend, the Topanga Library will open temporarily as an emergency cooling center to provide relief and protection from the heat.
Los Angeles County 's Rent Relief for Residents in High Need Areas

In an effort to assist renters with limited means affected by the COVID-19 crisis, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has provided $100 million in CARES Act funds to create a COVID-19 Rent Relief program, operated by the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA). The program is set to launch on Monday, August 17, 2020, and will remain open for a two-week period, closing on August 31, 2020. The program’s goal is to assist between 8,000 to over 9,000 households.
A Spread of 1,600 new plants in the Canyon Will Support Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators
In 2019-2020 the Greener Empowerment Foundation and Topanga Elementary School began a community-wide Pollinator Stewardship initiative to build habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators in Topanga Canyon. The team was able to share the 1,600 plants with partners across the canyon.

Not only is Topanga designated a Severe High Fire Risk area, it is also one of the most difficult areas in the state to defend in a wildfire. Fireworks can start brush fires. DO NOT set them off in our mountains!
