CA State Parks and RCDSMM Are Working on a Topanga Lagoon Restoration Project
The Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains is teaming up with CA State Parks to restore the Topanga Lagoon, so that endangered Southern California steelhead trout have a better chance of safely passing through local creeks. The project, funded by the CA State Coastal Conservancy, will also be focused on enhancing visitor use and accessibility, a new visitor center, lower-cost accommodations, and more. View the presentation and comments from the first public meeting, on Feb. 29, and share your own comments with the project team before April 15.
It's Important to Take Proper Precautions When Using and Disposing of Rags Wet With Combustible Stains and Paints
Rags used to wipe up spills or clean brushes during painting and staining projects can start fires if not handled carefully. Each year, an average of 1,700 home fires are caused by instances of spontaneous combustion or chemical reaction. And an average of 900 home fires are started when oily rags catch fire or are ignited.
Preparing for Fire in Southern California
Last week, as the Getty Fire, Easy Fire, and others burned, and as LA and Ventura Counties experienced the first-ever EXTREME RED FLAG WARNING, Warren Olney, host of KCRW's "To the Point," interviewed TCEP's Scott Ferguson about preparing for fires in Southern California. And TCEP's James Grasso took a reporter for the New Yorker on a tour of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and helispot 69Bravo for a conversation about wildfires.

Topanga Smart and Malibu Smart Programs Offer New Technologies to Help Residents Conserve Water
PRESS RELEASE – With increasing temperatures, persistent drought conditions and a prolonged fire season, it continues to be important to save water. To address these pressing environmental issues, the City of Malibu, County of Los Angeles and West Basin Municipal Water District are launching a comprehensive water conservation program. The Malibu Smart and Topanga Smart water savings programs will help both residential customers and businesses reduce water use by helping them get rebates for installing the latest watering technologies.
The Rodenticide Problem
A message from LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl: "Will you join me in pledging to #EndthePoisonChain? The use of anticoagulant rodenticide (rat poison) in your yard, your neighborhood, and your community does great harm to mountain lions, bobcats, and even your pets. The Santa Monica Mountains Fund and National Park Service are looking to sign up 10,000 community members who will refrain from using these deadly poisons. Learn more and take the pledge at samofund.org/takethepledge."
