Short Term Rental Survey & Comments

Share Your Thoughts on the Proposed Short Term Rental Ordinance and Take a Survey

SOME HISTORY:  On September 29, 2023, during a virtual information session for Topanga residents, the Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector answered questions and addressed concerns about a proposed ordinance to regulate the use of Short-Term Rentals (STR) in unincorporated LA County.  While the session was informative, several issues remain unresolved.

STR WORKING GROUP FORMED:  The Topanga Town Council has convened an urgent STR Working Group to provide an opportunity for local residents, landowners, and business owners to come together and brainstorm suggestions for potentially modifying the Ordinance ­so that it better addresses Topanga's needs and concerns.

Because time is of the essence, the Topanga Town Council quickly held the first of the STR Working Group meetings on Thursday, October 19, from 6:15-7:45pm at the Topanga Library.  Those who were unable to attend the first meeting, but wish to participate in the working group process, can attend the second STR Working Group meeting on Thursday, October 26, from 6:15pm to 7:45pm in the Topanga Library's Community Meeting Room (122 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd).

TAKE THE STR COMMUNITY SURVEY:  The Topanga Town Council has also drafted a Community STR Survey, to gather input from as many residents, property owners, and businesses as possible, so that we can share this information with the County.

The survey deadline is November 6th. Every adult in Topanga's 90290 zip code is invited to respond and is limited to one submission each. Please share this survey with your neighbors, Topanga organizations and businesses.

At an upcoming Town Council monthly meeting in November, we plan to invite the County to participate in a follow-up discussion about the STR Ordinance that will include input from this community survey. OTHER WAYS TO COMMENT ON STRs:  In addition, residents can submit their public comments to the drafting body (County Treasure and Tax Collector) at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Comments can also be submitted directly to the LA County Board of Supervisors.

COUNTY COMMENT DEADLINE: The County Board of Supervisors has not offered a firm date for the STR Ordinance vote, though it will likely occur this winter. Consequently, comments from the community should be submitted as soon as possible.

Note that the Topanga Town Council has no power over the drafting of this Ordinance. The Topanga Town Council is a community organization, not a legislative body; and does not take official positions on any issues. Our mission is to empower residents to take an active role in helping to craft proposed suggestions and solutions to some of the issues and challenges that the ordinance poses.
