LA County Library Turns 110!

LA County Library 1931

September 5, 2022 Marks the LA County Library's 110th Birthday
Published September 5, 2022, at 10:30 a.m.

On September 5, 1912, the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors established the “County Free Library.” The first branch was established on April 23, 1913 in one room of Mrs. Belle Jenks’ home in Willowbrook, with a collection of just 50 books.

By the end of the Library’s first 15 years on June 30, 1927, population-served had more than quadrupled since 1912 (from 100,000 to 412,000). Circulation of books had reached over 1.7 million, and 166 branches and outlets were in operation.

In 1931 — more than 90 years ago! — the Library’s Summer Reading Program was inaugurated.

Read more of the LA County Library's fascinating 110-year history, including what happened to the library system during the Great Depression and WWII, the Mobilibrary that served residents in the northernmost area of the county, the then-rural Antelope Valley desert, the advent of microfilm and digital content, and the library's two-millionth book — can you guess what year, and which book? (hint: it's authored by a prolific sci-fi author famous for his dystopian novel about book-burning).
