A Spread of 1,600 new plants in the Canyon Will Support Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators
Studies show Monarch butterfly populations have declined by more than 80% since 1980!
Thus, in 2019-2020 the Greener Empowerment Foundation and Topanga Elementary School began a community-wide Pollinator Stewardship initiative to build habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators in Topanga Canyon. The team was able to share the 1,600 plants received as a grant from the Xerces Society for the Conservation of Invertebrates with a wide range of Topanga partners -- including schools, businesses, restaurants, public entities, and private landowners who all engaged in the process of planting and caring for these habitat plants.
