How to Keep Track of COVID-19-Related Closures and Cancellations
Article posted: March 13, 2020, 6:30 p.m.

The constantly evolving pandemic situation is having an effect on events, meetings, schooling, and businesses in Topanga and throughout the country. California, and now the federal government, have declared state and national emergencies; and local and state officials have called for the cancelation of large public gatherings. Here's what we know, so far, and how to stay up-to-date.

Please note that these things are fluid and can change at any time. This is why it's important to go to the source for the most current updates and schedules.  Also, we will be temporarily suspending OneTopanga's community calendar to prevent confusion, as nearly all events are canceled or postponed.

Los Angeles Unified School District announced on Friday, March 13, it would close schools starting March 16 for at least two weeks. This obviously includes our local Topanga Elementary, and Paul Revere, Pali High and Calabasas High.
Hotline: 213-443-1300.

The Topanga Community Center has canceled or postponed all events - including TYS' Fiddler on the Roof - and the TCC is closed to the public until April 13. Please visit the Topanga Community Center website for up-to-date information:

The Topanga Library is still open, but the LA County Library system has suspended all public classes and meetings until at least March 31. Please call the library to get the most current information as the situation may change next week:

All LA (CITY) Public Libraries are closed through March 31. This includes many of the libraries in the valley.

The Theatricum Botanicum has also announced that its 2020 repertory season will be postponed, with the intention of opening the season in July. Please visit the Theatricum's website and/or Facebook for up-to-date information:

The Topanga Town Council canceled its monthly meeting on March 11. We will keep you up-to-date regarding the status of the next meeting, tentatively scheduled for April 8, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Topanga Library.

The LA County Board of Supervisors has canceled its meeting scheduled March 17. Keep up-to-date by following LA County BOS on Twitter:

For the latest information on the virus:  Both the City and County of Los Angeles have put together extremely helpful websites to keep the public up-to-date regarding COVID-19, and the steps local, state, and federal officials are taking to contain the virus, as well as the practices that residents should take to stay well and avoid exposure.

Take precautions for yourself and others.  In order to prevent serious stress on our health care system, first call your doctor for instruction if you are sick.  In general, and to protect yoursef and others, use recommended hygiene practices and social distancing!  Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Cover your cough or sneeze. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Practice social distancing: Keep at least six feet or more between yourself and others, avoid shaking hands, and avoid crowded areas. If you have a chronic disease, like lung disease, diabetes, cancer, a compromised immune system, are over 60 or pregnant, avoid unnecessary travel, unnecessary gatherings and events. If you need help with shopping or picking up prescriptions, sign up for delivery services, or reach out for assistance on Nextdoor.com or your friendly TCEP Neighborhod Network (if one is established on your street).

There are ways to stay safe and continue a healthy lifestyle---stay in touch with friends and loved ones by social media, video chats and telephone.  Talk a walk on the beach, visit a park, shop local Topanga businesses, all while practicing safe distances. Join an online class or cuddle up with a nice book.  You can visit Los Angeles County's digital library at lacountylibrary.org.  Continue keeping your body and mind healthy---and as stress-free as possible.  If you need help, reach out to the government links provided above.

We wish everyone good health and to be safe.
