Vast Majority of Bottled Water Contaminated by Microplastics, Study Says
When Abigail Barrows of Ocean Analytics analyzed 19 different brands of bottled water as part of a study commissioned by The Story of Stuff Project, she found all but one brand to be contaminated with plastic microfibers.
Barrows found that her samples contained an average of 8 particles between .1 and 1.5 millimeters in size per liter of water.
In addition to the more obvious plastic bags, packaging, bottles, and other waste in our oceans and rivers, washing synthetic clothing in washing machines is one of the most significant contributors to microfiber pollution in water, according to a report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
